Secondary Computing

Secondary Computing

Secondary Computing is a clear, practical textbook for students aged 11 to 14, following the national curriculum for computing in England at Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9). Students learn computational thinking, abstraction and algorithms, including linear and binary search and bubble and insertion sort; program in a block-based language and in Python, using variables, selection, loops, lists and functions; and discover how computers represent numbers, text, images and sound in binary, with binary addition, hexadecimal and Boolean logic gates. They look inside the processor at the fetch–decode–execute cycle, explore memory, storage, networks and the internet, and learn to stay safe, secure and responsible online, including the key laws on computer misuse, data protection and copyright. Creative projects build skills in collecting and analysing data and designing digital artefacts for real audiences. Every program listing has been run to check its output, and clear explanations, worked examples, questions with full answers and a glossary make it a supportive companion for class, homework and revision.
