Intermediate Grammar

A grammar book for learners aged 11 to 14 (Key Stage 3), and for adults who know the word classes and want full control of sentences and punctuation. One clear topic per unit: how word class depends on use, reflexive pronouns, adverb types and positions, phrases; simple, compound and complex sentences, the active and passive voice, cohesion and ellipsis; the twelve verb forms, infinitives, participles and gerunds, the subjunctive, and subject–verb and pronoun agreement; commas with non-defining relative clauses, semicolons, colons, dashes, hyphens, ellipsis marks and bullet points; spelling rules for ie and ei, -able and -ible, -ant and -ent, -cious and -cial, silent letters and -ough; connotation, changing word class, formal and informal register, and the confusables its and it’s, your and you’re, who’s and whose, could have, and I or me. Follows the national curriculum for English in England. Every unit has a worked example and practice questions, with answers, a glossary and an end-of-book check.
